1951 to 2020
It is with great sadness that the family of Chandra Angle announces her recent passing at the age of 69.
She will be deeply missed by her husband Randy of 49 years and her children Daryan (Jill), Trisha (Serge), and Kiri (Brad); by her grandchildren Poesy, Astrid, and Sullivan; by her brother Gwabal, her sisters Phulmattie, and Coomtie; by her nieces and nephews; and by her many friends and relatives.
Our Chandra was a lifelong learner. Her educational journey began after she completed her A-levels in Trinidad, her country of birth. Driven by a strong thirst for knowledge Chandra then moved to Alberta where she completed first an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry, followed by a Master of Science degree in Mineral Engineering and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, United Kingdom.
In addition to her formidable academic achievements, Chandra had an esteemed 40-year professional career doing energy-related research for the Government of Canada. She authored over 130 publications and reports, 7 book chapters, 2 reviews, and delivered over 107 oral presentations at meetings and conferences worldwide. In recognition of her contributions to Canada she received the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal.
A shining example of strength, Chandra achieved all of these professional and academic successes while simultaneously raising three children and creating a loving home.
Even in retirement, Chandra continued to learn and develop herself. Pursuing her passion for spirituality and creativity she became a yoga instructor, took up drawing, painting and jewellery-making. She enjoyed gardening, going for walks, talking with her many loved ones, and reading stories to her grandchildren.
Many thanks go out to her nieces and nephews Sasha, Deepa (Avinesh), and Nadira (Amit) for their help and guidance in the last few difficult weeks.
Close family will attend a Funeral Service at 10:00 am on Friday, November 20 at Country Hills Crematorium & Funeral Services in Calgary, Alberta.

Since Chandra left Canmet, I have missed our discussions and chats about shared interests and experiences. Her passion for life was amazing. She loved her family so much and talked about them with genuine joy. She has been one of the most memorable people in my life. She will be deeply missed. My sympathies and condolences go out to the family of this amazing woman.

My Condolences to Randy and the rest of Chandra’s family. I had the pleasure of working with Chandra for many years at CANMET on a variety of oil sands projects. I will always remember Chandra’s drive and enthusiasm in pursuit of her science. Aside from interesting technical discussions, she was just as enthusiastic describing her children’s accomplishments. I always admired her determination in earning her PhD a bit later in life while still working full time at CANMET. Chandra was taken too soon and she will be missed.
I worked for Chandra when I started with Canmet in 1996. She was the one who hired me to work in her team and under her leadership. I was so lucky and honored to work for her. I asked her a few years later as to why she chose me over others, and she replied that she needed a person who can keep her lab superclean and spotless. My training in microbilogy at university fited her bills. Chandra gave me lots of opportunities to work on numerous project for the 1st 5 yesrs I was under her. I learned a lot and discovered many new things from many different projects such as behavior of emulsions, emusifiers, thin films, and laminar flow to name a few. Chandra was a collid scientisti who was quite unique at that time. Apart from her work. Chandra talked about her kids a lot and I got to meet both her two daughters. Lots of wonderful memories! Chandra, I will forever miss you. And to Chandra’s family, my heart is with you in your time of sorrow.
Chandra was my postdoc supervisor at CANMET. She was a great mentor and friend. I miss the days when we worked together on projects, wrote research proposals, drafted manuscripts. We kept in touch after Chandra retired and I left CANMET. Two months ago, we had a long chat, she shared with me that she loved the quite small town she lived, enjoyed spending time with grandchildren. It is still fresh in my mind. I am deeply sorry to hear the sad news. She will be missed by so many. My heartfelt condolences go out to the family.

My deepest condolences. I worked for Chandra early in my career. She was a creative person. I remember she used to macramé which was something I hadn’t heard of up until then. But I think she preferred jewelry making. Her face would always light up when she spoke about jewelry making. We once had a conversation about lapis lazuli, which is a beautiful blue stone and happens to be the national stone of Chile. Chandra was incorporating the stone into one of her necklace designs. She would proudly wear her jewelry pieces to work. They were great conversation starters. Her passion for the creative process will be missed.
My deepest condolences to Chandra’s family and friends. I will remember our many conversations about raising children, aging, and so much more. Chandra was a gifted and wise conversationalist on such a vast array of topics; always speaking as such an old soul with a real passion for life. Her love of science abundantly apparent in the joy she got from sharing science with people, children in particular, it was mesmerizing how she would light up and transform. The deep love she had for her family was wonderful to see as she spoke of them often with pride. I will remember her fondly and with immense respect for the much accomplished woman she was. Randy, Chandra’s husband, joined our Library Board earlier this year and we have certainly appreciated the time that he and (in the background) Chandra committed to ensuring our ability to share literacy ad life-long learning with the local community, Your family is in our hearts.

Chandra was my greatest mentor. She was the one who hired me to worked directly under her leadership. She gave me so many valuable lessons on how to raise children. I will always remember our many conversation about raising children and cooking . I always admired her determination and her enthusiasm in pursuit of science. Her passion for life was amazing. I was so sad to hear the bad news of passing of our friend and colleague Chandra. I had the pleasure to work with Chandra in the same research group for twenty plus years. We not only discussed research related topics and exchanged ideas, but also chatted frequently about family life, health, travel, raising children and many other no-working subjects. She showed me many times pictures of her children and grandchildren. She was asking me a lot times about travel to China. After her retirement, I had talked to her several times. I felt so sorry for losing such a good friend. She will be deeply missed.
