Gurchain Singh Gill, age 82, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 18th, 2021, at the AgeCare SkyPointe Hospice Care at approximately 7:25 am, surrounded by his family.
He was born May 8th, 1939, in village Chela, District Hoshiarpur, Punjab, India, to Pritam Singh and Naseeb Kaur Gill. He married Gurdev Kaur in 1961 and lived in England until 1981, when the family moved to Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He was predeceased by his father Pritam Singh Gill, mother Naseeb Kaur Gill and wife Gurdev Kaur Gill.
Gurchain lived a happy and fulfilling life. He loved playing the card game Seep and having arm wrestles. He loved going for long peaceful walks, which kept him in shape so he could keep his hard handshake. He was the family’s Google Maps and could tell you three different ways to get anywhere in the city. His great sense of humour was matched with a deep knowledge of history and religion. Gurchain’s smile and enthusiasm was the first thing you noticed. His softness was a testament to his humility, and he always saw the best in people. He was very conscientious of being there for everyone, especially in times of need, no matter what time of day. His love for his children and grandchildren was unparalleled. He was a hard worker and was selflessly dedicated to ensuring all of his children went to university. It was a very proud moment for him to see them succeed in their careers. Gurchain’s greatest joy came from being with family, friends, and relatives and seeing them happy.
He is survived by his daughter Harjinder (Kuljit) Garcha, sons Harjinder (Harprit), Balkar (Fay) and Iqbal (Salmina), grandchildren Sukhmeet, Simran, Kiran, Amrit and Azaad, and many nephews, nieces, cousins and extended family.
Funeral Ceremonies will be held at Country Hills Crematorium (11995 16th Street NE, Calgary) on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at 1:00 pm. Following the ceremony, final prayers and langar will be at the Dashmesh Culture Center Gurdwara, 135 Martindale Blvd NE.
