In Loving Memory of Walter Rae Erickson

May 15, 1952 – September 18, 2026
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Walter Rae Erickson, who passed away peacefully in Calgary, Alberta, on September 18, 2026, at the age of 74.
We also have joy knowing that he is in the presence of His risen saviour and Lord.

Born May 15, 1952, in Eckville, Alberta, Walt was raised in Tangent, Alberta, with his cherished parents and two sisters, Marilyn and Sandy. Walt’s mom’s twin sister Marlene; husband Stan along with family Rita, Edwin & Lorraine lived across the road. Rita was like an extra sister. They were about 2 weeks apart in age & have always stayed close. After Walt’s mom passed, Aunt Marlene became like his second mother.

When Walt was 18 years old, and a week into his first week of post-secondary education at NAIT, he was in a car accident that changed the trajectory of his life when he became a paraplegic. He spent a year doing occupational therapy to adjust to life in a wheelchair. This accident could have turned him into an angry person; however, Walt exemplified how perseverance, patience, and a positive attitude can carry a person through their hardest struggles. This is a legacy he has taught us all. He will forever be remembered for his positive attitude, patient spirit and strong faith in the Lord Jesus.

He later moved to Edmonton, AB, where he met and fell in love with his beautiful bride, Janice. Their love story continued for over 51 years of marriage. Their journey together was a testament to love, companionship, and the memories they built side by side. Together, they raised their daughter, Melanie, who was a precious part of Walt's life and one of his greatest joys. Walt was a valued employee with Motorola for over 20 years. Throughout his life, he created lasting memories and meaningful connections with the people. He was always happy to start up a conversation with someone, win at crib, and maybe even try his luck at the poker table with his buddies.

Walt was a talented musician with a genuine love for playing the guitar. Music was a special gift he shared with the world, and his guitar was a source of joy and expression. He will always be remembered for the way he could pick up his guitar, play a familiar tune and have everyone else singing along. He had an incredible gift of being able to play a song after only hearing it once, as well as an incredible singing voice. He loved leading a sing-a-long at the campfire at family reunions. He also had a great repertoire for unique songs, including “I Don’t Look Good Naked Anymore”, “I Wanna Be a Dog”, and many others.

Walt’s love for travelling took Jan & him on many wonderful adventures. Travelling overseas in a wheelchair wasn’t always easy. Walt’s attitude of turning a problem into an adventure overcame any misgivings that Jan might have had.

He found happiness in the simple, meaningful things in life: going for walks, spending time with family, and enjoying the company of friends. He also enjoyed his trips down to the sun in Arizona and Mexico.

Walt leaves behind his loving wife, Janice; his daughter, Melanie; and the family and friends who loved him and will miss him dearly. He was predeceased by his parents,
Margaret and Rae, daughter Kimberly, brother-in-law Dave, sister-in-law Susan, uncle Stan, and other family members.

Though words cannot fully express the loss of someone so special, Walt's memory will live on through the people he loved, the moments they shared, and the music that brought him joy.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Peter Lougheed Centre for their care. We are thankful that he is no longer in pain, but safe in the arms of Jesus.
