Dr. Jagannath K. Wani

We are sad to say that Dr. Jagannath K. Wani  lost his bravely fought battle with cancer.  He passed away peacefully at the Sarcee Hospice in Calgary on Friday May 5, 2017 at the age of 82 2/3 years (he always liked to be precise).  In his final months, his family (daughter Varsha, son Raju, daughter-in-law Pratima, grandchildren Deliya and Saajan and relatives from India), were able to spend many quality hours with him.  His grandchildren even attempted to beat him in chess.  To us he was a great father and grandfather, but to many he was a great role model, mentor and a helping hand.  He was a Professor Emeritus of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Calgary but his true love was his philanthropic work.  He focused his attention on mental illness, fundraising for the less fortunate in India, and promotion of India’s art and culture in North America.  He founded more than 18 Canadian and Indian organizations in the areas of education, culture, and health.  For this work he was awarded the Order of Canada on May 3, 2013.  He made a difference in so many peoples lives.  He will be lovingly remembered and missed by all of us.

At Jagannath’s request, the family is conducting a private cremation.
