Vir Singh Gill

With heavy hearts, we sadly announce the passing of husband and wife, Major Vir Singh Gill (Retd.) and Sardarni Gurmeet Kaur Gill; both due to natural causes. After 68 years of marriage, they went peacefully and together. Until the end, they were never apart. Vir Singh was hospitalized on June 28 th and Gurmeet Kaur soon followed on June 30 th . With their beds side by side, Gurmeet Kaur passed away later that week on July 2 at 9:15pm. She was surrounded by family as her husband held her hand and spoke of their love and life together. Vir Singh soon passed 11 days later (July 13 th ) at 2:15pm. As he wished, he is now with his wife Gurmeet Kaur once again.

Life & Marriage
Those of us who were blessed with their presence knew this about them: They welcomed everyone – family, friends, and strangers alike – into their hearts and home. No one left without a heart full of love and stomach full of food. No one was turned away without the help they needed. Vir Singh and Gurmeet Kaur truly lived the values of family and community, love and compassion. Married on May 17, 1952 for 68 years their actions gave joy and comfort to the lives of countless people. From bringing prosperity to their family and village, to their continued service to community after immigrating to Canada in November 1991. Gurmeet Kaur was born in the village Killi Chahlan (dist. Moga), Punjab to Sardar Charan Singh Chahal and Sardarni Sham Kaur Chahal. A kind and gentle soul who made every child feel loved and accepted – from her siblings to nieces and nephews to grandchildren and everyone in-between – they were all raised by her wonderful stories and delicious food. She was small but mighty; her warmth and affection were matched only by her strength and support, especially of her husband Vir Singh. Vir Singh was born in village Kaleke (dist. Moga), Punjab to Bhag Singh Gill and Rattan Kaur Gill. At 6’1, he was a big man with an even bigger heart who dedicated his life to family and community. He served in the Indian Army for 33 years (1950 to 1983) retiring at the rank of Major. He was awarded numerous medals as both an officer and engineer. He continued to work as taxi dispatcher and accountant after coming to Canada. During this time and long after retirement, he dedicated himself to serving the Punjabi Sikh community and North East Calgary. This included the establishment of the Indian Ex-Servicemen Immigrant Association in 1996 and later appointment as the President of the Dashmesh Cultural Centre (Sikh Temple) from 2001-2003. For his incredible service to the public, he was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 by the Government of Canada. He was a strong and generous soul; the result of the love and support of his wife Gurmeet Kaur. As they have accepted countless people from all walks of life into their home and warm embrace, may they now be accepted into the home and warm embrace of the Creator…. together as always. They are survived by son Gurvinder Singh Gill, daughter Baljinder Kaur Sidhu, son-in-law Jarnail Singh Sidhu, 3 grandchildren (Jaskaran Kaur Sidhu, Rajpavit Singh Sidhu, and Kirtpal Singh Sidhu) and 3 great-grandchildren.
