December 1, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
Our bright and beautiful Brooklyn Elizabeth McFarlane tragically passed away on December 1, 2024 at the Foothills Hospital from Addisons Disease; she was 23 years old.
Brooklyn came into this world on March 13, 2001 at 12:44pm. She was the first born of three children to Sheena and Mike McFarlane.
Brooklyn graduated from John G Diefenbaker High School in June 2019. In September 2019 she started a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Calgary. Brooklyn was excited to start the next chapter of her life as a university student. She was hanging out with friends, going to football games and having a great time.
In October 2019 Brooklyn started to get sick and in August 2020 she was diagnosed with Addisons Disease. Brooklyn spent the next few years healing and learning to manage her life threating illness.
In September 2024, Brooklyn started the legal assistant program at SAIT. She enjoyed the program and decided that once she graduated from SAIT, she was going to get her paralegal certification. Brooklyn was really looking forward to a career in the law.
Brooklyn worked part time at Levi’s in Cross Iron Mills Mall as a sales associate. She started in October 2023. Brooklyn enjoyed working at Levi’s with all of her co-workers.
Brooklyn loved spending time with her family and fur siblings. Her dogs were a source of therapy for her. They knew when she wasn’t feeling well and made her feel better. Brooklyn loved her family more then anything. She was always there for her brother and sister whenever they needed her. She loved family dinners, game nights and doing puzzles.
Brooklyn had a love of reading, cooking and candy. If she wasn’t reading, she was trying new recipes, or making meals for her family. Her inspiration came from all of the cooking shows she loved so much. Her dream was to open a gluten free café. Brooklyn was diagnosed with Celiac disease in 2012 and since then she was experimenting with all kinds of baking. Brooklyn was always trying new sour candy, her favorite. She would always share her sweet and sour finds with her family but her dad was usually the one who was the taste tester.
Brooklyn was a bright and beautiful soul. Her energy and smile lit up every room she entered and made everyone feel welcome. Brooklyn wasn’t a selfish person; she was the person who would give the shirt off her back if you needed it. Her laughter, kindness and love are just a few things that her family and friends are going to miss.
Brooklyn is survived by her mum and dad, Sheena McFarlane and Mike McFarlane; her brother Ewan McFarlane and sister Irelan McFarlane. Brooklyn is also survived by her uncles Craig (Jocelyn) McMurray and Dylan (Laura) Neufeld; her cousins Emma Neufeld, Jake Neufeld and Dorothy McMurray; her grandparents Ian and Linda McMurray, Margerat McMurray and June and Keith McFarlane; also, numerous family members in Canada, England and her amazing friends.

I never met Brooklyn, her Mum Sheena is my cousin, she left England for Canada as a young child, so I only remember her as a baby. However I feel Sheena’s loss of her beautiful daughter very deeply, my sincere sympathy and love goes to Sheena, Mike, Ewan and Irelan, and my lovely Uncle Ian, Brooklyn’s Grandad. May Brooklyn rest in peace, a beautiful angel. Love from Julia

I hadn’t seen Brooklyn in many years however seeing the pictures that Sheena posts she was a beautiful young woman and far too young to be taken from her family.
I wish there were words of wisdom one could say to help ease what I can only imagine to be an unbearable heartbreak but for now we’re thinking of you and sending our love to you Mike, Sheena, Ewan and Irelan.
Our thoughts were with you all on Friday. With lots fove from Auntie Di and Uncle Tony xx
I’m sorry I couldn’t attend Brooklyn’s service yesterday, but I’ve been thinking of you and your family as you celebrate Brooklyn’s beautiful life and navigate your new reality. She will live on in your hearts forever.
I am so sad to hear of Brooklyn’s passing, she was far too young to go so soon. I enjoyed teaching her and having her as part of our CNGS musical theatre family. She had a lovely sense of humour and always smiled at my jokes even if they were accompanied by a well deserved eye roll.
My deepest condolences to all those who’ll being missing her. She was a great kid.
