Dr. Raj Singhal

Dr. Raj Singhal passed away peacefully in Calgary on December 20, 2020 at the age of 79. He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife Mohini Singhal and his daughters Rebecca Singhal-Patel and Meena Singhal, his son-in-law Shamir Patel, and grand-daughters Raina and Ria.

Dr. Singhal’s greatest achievements have been in the area of technology transfer where regionally, nationally, and internationally he brought together industry, government, and private researchers. He is the chair of the international organizing committees of both the International Symposium on Mine Planning and Equipment Selection, and the International Conference on Environmental Issues and Management of Waste in Energy and Mineral Production, as well as the founding editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Surface Mining, Reclamation, and Environment. He was an established writer, having authored more than 140 technical papers. He was a Fellow of CIM and of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy and a Distinguished Member of the Society of Mining Engineers. He was also the recipient of the CIM District Proficiency Medal for his significant contributions to the Canadian Mining Industry through applied research and technology transfer.

Affectionately known as Grandpe, our dearest Raj was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. We will deeply miss his compassion, generosity, sense of humour, humanity, and intellect.
