On August 4, 2016 Gian Singh Virk left this world having lived a full life. He was a pillar within the family and community and enhanced the lives of others. He had a strong sense of responsibility and a strong sense of community. His journey started on January 23, 1936 when he was born into this world in the small village of Moravali in India. His passion for learning drove him to become the first Virk to attend and graduate from college with a degree in Indian Literature. Following his marriage to Harbhajan in 1957, he moved to the United Kingdom in 1962, followed by the move to Canada in 1970, where Golden, BC became his home for the remainder of his journey in this world. Two of the passions in his life, other than the Selkirk Inn, were writing poetry and public speaking. He never missed an opportunity to speak at weddings and family gatherings, always imparting words of wisdom. He was also active in the political scene for Golden and the District of East Kootenay. Within the Golden South Asian community, he was a trailblazer, being the first Indo-Canadian to becaome a businessman in the town of Golden with the Purchase of the Selkirk Inn in 1979. Gian is survived by a large family, including his wife, two siblings, his sons, three daughters-in-law, six grandchildren and a large extended family.
