On Wednesday, May 13, 2020, at age 72, the world lost a skilled fisherman, notorious prankster, gifted storyteller, dedicated father, and beloved husband.
Ken was born in Montreal on June 1, 1947 and raised in “The Point”. He completed his draftsman training in Montreal, packed up his VW Beetle, and moved to Calgary in 1972. It only took several decades of fishing, but he finally caught the love of his life, Joyce. They were married on July 16, 1983 and Ken became a stepfather to Wade and Jennifer, and later a father to Sarah, Brittany, and Meghan.
Ken’s main mission in life was to bring a smile to everyone’s face, especially complete strangers (much to the chagrin of his wife); either with a compliment, quick joke, or bald-faced lie (e.g., the family pet turtles hibernated in the fridge in the winter). He was an avid fisherman, like his grandfather, and was keen to patiently share his knowledge with his children, friends, and anyone else who would listen. To him, fishing was not just a hobby, it was a passion and an opportunity to make a spiritual connection with nature. He often said he belonged to the “Church of Duck Lake Montana”. Ken loved working for various engineering firms and as a contractor in the Calgary oil and gas industry for over 40 years. He was a hard and honest worker who enjoyed interacting with his many colleagues and being part of the “rumor distribution” department. Ken volunteered for many organizations over the years including the Petroleum Ski Club, Fish and Wildlife, the Salvation Army, Westwind Fly Fishers, and the Calgary Hook and Hackle Club. He took pride in his famous lasagna and pasta dishes, was an enthusiastic consumer of international cuisine, and sincerely enjoyed bringing people together to share a meal. He always made sure to have a steamed hot dog every day whenever he visited Montreal.
Ken was predeceased by his parents, George and Doris(Fiander). He is survived by his wife, Joyce(Rooks), his five children, Wade (Heather) Gieni, Jennifer Gierent, Sarah (Jason Wong), Brittany, and Meghan (Christopher Plessis), and his brother, Howard (Lynn). He was a proud grandfather to Kaden, Madison, Tyler, Adriana, Cameron, Laura, and Simon.
Our family would like to express our deep gratitude to the doctors, nurses, staff, and volunteers at the Salvation Army Agape Hospice for the exceptional care they provided Ken since February. Your kindness and care eased our minds and allowed him to enjoy the time he had left with an endless line of visitors. It was a fitting last home for Ken as he rang the bells for the Salvation Army every Christmas for many years until his cancer diagnosis. Thank you to Dr. Sy Lam for many years of care and the staff at the Liver Clinic at FHH. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society Research, Agape Hospice, or the SPCA since Ken was a proud owner of several dogs throughout his life. As Ken said after his diagnosis, “have an annual checkup”.

Dear Hutchinson family,
My deepest condolences to your family on the loss of Ken. I was Ken’s next door neighbour on Fortune street. I have such lovely memories of him and his family and of course their dog Laddie. Sincere Condolences from the McGeachie Family to Joyce and family.
I met Ken in 1963 when he worked with my husband Bob at Montreal Engineering in Montreal. Bob and Ken were fortunate to meet again when they once again worked together in Calgary.
Ken was a prankster. I am aware of many of his pranks some played on Bob and some on me. However, I do remember several where the prank(s) were on Ken. We spent time with Ken in 1975 when Bob and Ken both worked for Ralph M. Parsons in Pasadena. Lots of fun and laughs.
Ken and I had a long time bet when he was single that I would get my drivers licence before he got married. I lost by one week and it cost be a lunch at the Bay cafeteria.
Ken was a valued friend. Rest my friend rest.

Joyce and family.
Ken will be remembered as a man who gave everyone he met a happy memory. His stories and quick one-liners made everyone appreciate his humour and sense on good fun. A jokester who enjoyed playing the joke or being on the receiving end of one well played. We have all lost a great friend, food connoisseur, story teller, workmate, a Santa Claus and beer drinking buddy. Ken is now sitting with GOD and teaching him how to tie a fly to a fishing line.
Farewell my friend. Eldon

Sincere condolences to the family. I knew Kenneth from the Point in Montreal but besides that he was a classmate of mine from grade 4 to grade 7 at Lorne School in the Point. We lost track of each in the later years but I had bumped into Ken once or twice in Calgary and he was the same jovial person that I knew from Fortune Street in Montreal. rest in Peace Ken.

My memory of Ken is that if he was along, it would be a fine fishing trip, fish or no fish. He was able to ensure that everyone got along and had a good time. Guys like Ken don’t come very often. He will be missed by those old hands he used to fish with at Roche Lake. Our sympathy to Joyce and the family..

I worked with Ken on the Shell and Kearl projects near the ends of our careers. We were both “Old Timers” who “learned the ropes” in a different time for Engineering. We shared similar philosophies about our work and concern for the future of our younger people. We also shared many stories about work and families. I let him know that I was glad he was still out there helping others to learn after he moved on to other assignments. He was one of the good ones. We will all miss him. Deepest condolences to all of his family.

My first job after graduating was with Partec Lavalin and I shared an office with Ken. He loved to interact with other people and share stories. In addition to his responsibilities as Chief Civil Structural draftsman, Ken was also responsible for Rumor Control (His friend Ash Ali was Rumor Distribution). Ken was a very knowledgeable and supportive workmate and he will be missed by many. Ken was also an avid outdoors man and our family enjoyed a number of seasons camping up at Dickson Dam next door to Ken and Joyce and their children. Leslie and I would like to offer our most sincere condolences.
