Jean Hazel Wallace

October 20, 1934 – June 25, 2024

Jean passed away peacefully at the Mayfair Care Centre in Calgary, Alberta on June 25, 2024. Raised by a loving family in Saint John, New Brunswick, Jean was the daughter of Ora and Dove Wallace.  She was devoted to her husband, Carl, who predeceased her in 2018, for 58 years. Loving mother of Janet Warren (Dave) and Doug (Tori), grandmother of Steven (Nicole), Annie (Devon), Jamie, Katie, Charlotte and Madison, great-grandmother to Else, Aubrey, Hazel and David. She is predeceased by less than two months by her identical twin sister, Janet, with whom she maintained a close and loving relationship for her entire life.

Jean graduated from high school in Saint John in 1953 before obtaining her qualifications as a Registered Laboratory Technologist in 1955. Jean and Carl married on August 20, 1960 and shortly  thereafter, they moved to Alberta where Carl was attending graduate school. In 1961, Jean taught pathology as a sessional lecturer at the University of Alberta. Jean and Carl then settled in Sudbury in 1965. There, Jean served as President of the Laurentian Faculty Women’s Club in 1974-75. In  1981, she returned to work part-time as a lab tech at Laurentian Hospital.

While Jean’s professional life involved working in the hospital, her personal life focused on curling  and the camp. She was an avid and skilled curler and coach who played well into her 70s. In 1972,  Jean and Carl purchased a camp on the French River. For the next 25 years, Jean spent every  summer there with her family and friends. It was her happy place.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that any donations be made to the Maison McCulloch Hospice in Sudbury, Ontario: https://maisonsudburyhospice.org/donate/.
