Karen Gayle Lucas, age 86, of Calgary, Alberta, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2026

Karen was predeceased by her beloved husband, Lyle Karmen Lucas, who passed away in 1997, and her son, Allan Howard Lucas, who passed away in 2025.

She is lovingly remembered by her children: Grant Lucas and his wife, Mala, of Atlanta, Georgia; Dwight Lucas and his wife, Gina, of Calgary, Alberta; and Kathy Schmidt and her husband, Rick, of Calgary, Alberta. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren, Megan, Melissa, Tyler, Kendal, Austin, and Colin; her great-grandchildren, Ophelia, Rowen, Lennox, and Bryony; her sister, Marlann Hasegawa of Raymond, Alberta and cousin Carole-Bea Claney, of Edmonton, Alberta.

Karen was born in Edmonton, Alberta, to her parents, Allan “Bud” and Martha Harmer. She grew up in Edmonton, where she met the love of her life, Lyle. They married in 1961 and made their home in Edmonton where all four children were born before moving to Calgary in 1969, where they raised their family.

Karen devoted many years to being a loving wife and mother before beginning a successful career in sales, a profession she enjoyed well into her seventies. Together, Karen and Lyle created a home where the door was always open to family, friends, and dogs. Many memorable evenings were spent gathered around the dining room table, sharing great meals, laughter, and conversation.

Following Lyle’s passing, Karen moved into her condominium, where she became an active member of the condominium board, serving until a few years ago. She also took great pride in planting and caring for the flowers throughout the complex, helping make it a beautiful place for everyone to enjoy.

Karen’s love of gardening was evident to anyone who walked past her home. Her patio and the surrounding gardens were always filled with vibrant flowers, reflecting the care and joy she found in nurturing them.

She also had a lifelong love of dogs. Over the years, her family included Cocker Spaniels, English Springer Spaniels, a Great Dane, and, in later years, Shih Tzus. Karen and Lyle welcomed their first dog before they had children, and throughout her life, there was always a beloved canine companion by her side—though, the dogs became smaller over the years.

Karen touched the lives of many through her kindness, generosity, and welcoming spirit. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
