It is with great sadness that the family of George Robert Monner of Calgary, Alberta announces his passing on January 2, 2024 at the age of 76 years.
George Robert Monner was born in Bassano, Alberta on January 6, 1947. George attended school in Milo, Alberta, from Grade 1 through Grade 12, then attended the University of Alberta in Edmonton and convocated with a BSc in Agricultural Economics in 1972.
George returned to the family farm for a few years, then accepted a position with Alberta Agriculture in Airdrie, Alberta. In 1981, George transferred to Fairview, Alberta as a Farm Economist. The very first desktop computers were just being introduced, and George helped to develop a computer program for calculating the costs of production for various types of farming operations. George really enjoyed developing and teaching recordkeeping systems to farmers.
Shortly after his move to Fairview, George met and married Patricia Lancaster. In 1985, George and Pat -began a hobby farm growing fruit native to the Peace River Country. George retired from Alberta Agriculture in 2002, and devoted more time to the farming operation. In 2006, George and Pat purchased an interest in a liquor store in Grimshaw, Alberta, and George became the operations manager. George loved wintering in California and operating the fruit orchard in the summer. He continued to be a computer geek, and automated everything he possibly could.
George is survived by his wife Patricia Lancaster-Monner of Calgary, Alberta; his son Cory (Cheryl) Lancaster of Fairview, Alberta; Sean (Charla) Monner of Calgary, Alberta; Chris (Karen) Monner of Calgary, Alberta; Shari Monner (Danny Booth) of Calgary, Alberta; Lauri (Junior) Fudge of Montague, PEI; and seven grandchildren, Evan Lancaster, Cassidy Lancaster, Lauryn Monner, Jaxon Monner, Emily Fudge, Conner Fudge and Baylee Fudge.
George is also survived by his sister Dianne Monner of Milo, Alberta, his sister-in-law Rose Monner of Milo, Alberta, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
George was predeceased by his father Lawrence Monner, his mother Dorothy Monner, and his brothers Ken (Mike) Monner and John Monner, and his nephew Randy Monner.
As per George’s wishes there will be no funeral or celebration of life. If you wish to remember him with a donation, he was a strong supporter of Operation Smile. https://www.smilesforchildren.ca

I worked with George Monner while he was Farm Economist in Fairview and I was in a similar position out of Leduc. We would have frequent meetings of the Farm Economists, usually in Edmonton. However, one year George hosted the meeting at Fairview. It was enlightening for all us , though I had been to the Peace country three times, some of us had never been there before. George and his wife Patricia were great hosts while we were there. George demonstrated how to mechanically harvested saskatoons on afternoon.
Another time, when buying over the internet was just beginning, I remarked that I was reluctant to use my main credit card with a high limit to pay for small things with the risk of being hacked. George remarked that he had a credit card with a modest limit ($1,000 at the time), that he used for paying for items ordered over the internet. If it was hacked then, losses would be minimal. I still use this system today, though I have had to raise the limit to $2,000 on the ‘remote’ credit card. This was typical of George, define a problem and come up with a workable solution and move on.
George was a good economist and a fine man!
Pat and family — Ralph and I send our condolences to you at this difficult time. We will be thinking of you during the coming days.
I was sorry to hear about George’s passing. My condolences to his family. I worked with George a bit in the early 1980’s at the regional Alberta Ag center in Airdrie, and later interracted a bit with him when he was setting up a fruit orchard in the Peace Region. Will always remember him.
Our deepest condolences on the passing of George to Pat and his family. We knew George as a classmate from U of A, and later shared rides to AIC meetings in Calgary when he was living and Milo and we were in Arrowwood. We have kept in touch and in later years got together in Mesa Arizona.
Our thoughts are with you at this difficult time.
