It is with great sadness that the family of John Robert Powell announces his sudden passing, at his home in Calgary, Alberta on Sunday, July 23, 2023. John was born on June 3, 1951 and was the eldest child of Norman and Vera Powell of Dobbinton, Ontario.
Upon graduating from C.D.H.S. (Chesley), John was given an opportunity through a cousin to take up employment in road construction. That was his starting point. Over four decades ago, John loaded up the El Camino and headed west. He thoroughly enjoyed his career as a heavy equipment operator. His retirement was spent enjoying on-line golf, sending emails, and making/keeping connections as well as countless hours on his 3D printers. John’s 3D creations kept his mind sharp, and people enjoyed receiving some of his unique gadgets.
John had wit and wisdom and no matter his many challenges over the years, he calmly carried on. He truly made the best of every situation. He’d say, “No sense getting all worked up about it.” In years now past, John’s 4-legged friends were his constant companions. He enjoyed travelling, however most of his trips were back to Ontario, to get caught up with family and friends.
John had a beautiful network of friends that included his amazing medical team. He, and we, are grateful for them all. He will be dearly missed by his siblings, Doug (Roberta) Powell, Linda (Mark) Schwartz, and Murray (Victoria) Powell as well as by his several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. John was predeceased by his parents and one nephew.
Cremation has taken place and a private graveside service will be held at a later date when John will be laid to rest with our parents in Chesley, Ontario.

I worked with John at Fish Creek Excavating for many many years. Much to his dismay I called him Johnnie Peepers! We had some great times at FCE, and I have many fond memories of him. Usually it was me yelling at him for something or other, while he just laughed! My sincere condolences to his family and friends. RIP Johnnie Peepers.
