In Loving Memory of Mike Manser.
Surrounded by his devoted wife, Elaine, and beloved children – Rob, Glenn, and Heather – and their spouses – Suzanne, Larissa, and Jason – Michael William Shannon Manser peacefully passed away on June 2, 2023, in Calgary, Alberta. After bravely battling cancer for four years, Mike called for a family group hug and then departed on his own terms, embracing the eternal peace he so deserved. While his absence leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved him, his memory will forever shine as a beacon of love and generosity.
Born on December 15, 1948, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Mike spent his childhood in Lakefield, Ontario, where he met and married Elaine. They raised their family in Amherstburg, Ontario, and later moved to Calgary, Alberta, where he was close to his beloved mountains.
Throughout his life, Mike embraced love, curiosity, and unwavering devotion to his family. Throughout their 54-year marriage, Mike and Elaine shared countless precious moments and travels, their love and companionship serving as a pillar of strength during his battle with cancer. Elaine’s unwavering support and constant presence brought comfort to Mike, ensuring he was surrounded by love until the end.
Nature and the outdoors held a deep connection to Big Hoss’ life. He found joy and serenity in the simplicity of camping and immersing himself in the beauty of the natural world, a direct extension of his lifelong curiosity about the wonders of the universe and beyond.
As a father, Mike (aka Poppa Smurf) led by example for his children, instilling in them values of integrity, resilience, and compassion. His love for nature became a shared passion that brought the family closer together and nurtured their appreciation for the wonders of the world.
Mike’s devotion also extended to being a loving grandfather. He cherished moments spent with his grandchildren, Mikaela (Cole), Brendan, Riley, and Jack. Whether it was camping, playing games, sharing stories, or simply being present, Mike formed a special bond with each grandchild that will be treasured forever. His love and wisdom will continue to guide them throughout their lives.
To his larger, extended family, Mike was a source of wisdom and guidance, always ready to lend a helping hand and share a few jokes along the way.
Mike, your quiet love, curiosity, and unwavering spirit will forever reside in our hearts. May you embark on cosmic adventures, find eternal peace, and continue exploring the mysteries of the universe.
Instead of donations, the family kindly asks that you take a moment to appreciate the beauty of nature, marvel at the wonders of the cosmos, and spend cherished time with your loved ones.
