Santosh Kumar Das passed away the Rockyview General Hospital on August 2, 2024 at the age of 82 years. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends
Funeral Services will be held at COUNTRY HILLS CREMATORIUM & FUNERAL SERVICES, 11995 – 16 Street NE on Wednesday, August 7, 2024 between 3:00pm and 5:00 pm.
Santosh Das was born in Greater Noakhali on Sandeep Island, a well-known and established Mohajan family. After some time, he moved to Char Bata, Sudharam, with his family and grew up there. Tragically, he lost his mother when he was just 10 years old. Although his father was financially stable, he lacked emotional support. Despite this, he had a profound eagerness to study and would walk long distances to school, enduring all kinds of weather.
After completing primary school, he was admitted to Kalyan Middle School in Maizdi, Noakhali, where he stayed with his teacher and British-India freedom fighter Sir Sailesh Roy Chowdhury. He referred to him as Kaka Babu. Kaka Babu was a father figure, teacher, mentor, and role model, inspiring him in all aspects of life. Kaka Babu’s dedication and affection helped him excel academically.
Following his secondary education, he enrolled in Comilla Victory College for his Higher Secondary Certification. He then gained admission to Ahsanullah Engineering College (now BEUT). Despite the loss of his father before his final exams, he persevered and completed his Bachelor’s degree. Known for his gentle demeanor, honesty, and positive outlook, he faced numerous challenges after his father’s death, including attempts by relatives to claim his substantial property. He navigated these difficulties with intelligence, problem-solving skills, and strong courage, defending his rights through various court proceedings.
He embarked on a successful career, joining the Power Development Board as an Assistant Engineer in the Distribution Division in Khulna. He advanced through the ranks to become an Executive Engineer, Chief Engineer, Manager, and eventually a prestigious Member of the Board, overseeing Transmission and System Operation. His job required him to be stationed across Bangladesh, including locations such as Khulna, Dinajpur, Hori Pour, Ashugong, Shajibazar, and Sirshirgong, with his final posting in Dhaka before retirement. He also served for several years on deputation as an Executive Engineer at the Central Load Dispatch Center in Tripoli, Libya. Throughout his career, he represented Bangladesh at international seminars in countries including Japan, China, Hong Kong, the UK, Russia, and India.
He was an expert in managing the National Load Dispatch Center, load management under various conditions, including acute shortages of electricity, low voltage situations, and irrigation load supply management during summer and winter. He was proficient in minimum demand management, system protection management, and independent power production management. He played a key role in commissioning plants and scheduling interconnections, all while adhering to the cost guidelines outlined in the Power Purchase Agreement.
A diligent and honest officer, he was never involved in corruption and always prioritized the nation’s welfare. His dedication earned him widespread respect and affection. He married Himani Roy, and they were blessed with a daughter, Lina Bairagi, and a son, Sushovan Das, as well as four grandchildren: Rimjhim, Rishi, Gungun, and Slok.
Committed to societal improvement, he worked to enhance the quality of life for common people by facilitating electricity access in rural areas, establishing numerous tube wells to ensure drinking water availability at his own expense, and donating land for road construction and cremation purposes.
May God bless him with eternal peace.
