LAIL – Sardar Mohan Singh
1947 – 2018
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sardar Mohan Singh Lail, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to so many. He left us peacefully on Monday, January 22nd with his wife, Sardarni Sawinder Kaur, at his side. His loss is being felt by his family and friends for whom he was a pillar of strength and integrity. Many in the community are remembering him for his selfless service and the integral role he played in helping to nurture the Punjabi community in its early days in Calgary. For his brothers at CP Rail he was a warm and loyal friend who was respected for his hard work and perseverance in the face of adversity.
Mohan Singh was the eldest son of the late Sardar Nasib Singh and Sardarni Balwant Kaur, and is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sawinder Kaur. His legacy will be carried on by his children: his two sons; Sarbdip Singh (Pal Kaur) and Jagdip Singh (Rajvir Kaur), and his daughter Jasdip Kaur. His grandchildren; Arjun Singh and Veerin Singh, will forever remember him as their gentle giant with his unconditional love, kindness, and humorous story telling. Mohan Singh was predeceased by his younger brother Harpal Singh (Amarjit Kaur) of Calgary, and is survived by his siblings Dr. Harjit Singh (Gurparkash Kaur) of Abbotsford, BC, Sukhdev Singh (Harjeet Kaur) of Calgary, and Jaswinder Kaur Johal (Jagdish Singh Johal) of Penticton, BC. He leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Born in Mukandpur, Jalandar (now Nawanshahr) on October 15, 1947, Mohan Singh immigrated to Canada in 1971. Like many immigrants who came to Canada, he came in search of a better life for himself and his family. He initially settled in Beiseker, Alberta, and then explored opportunities in Alberta and Manitoba before settling in Calgary with his family in 1973. Through his hard work, honesty, integrity, strength, and unrelenting resolve he enjoyed a life rich with laughter, joy, and the warm embrace of family. He shared his blessings, and was a pillar of support to many family and friends who made the uncertain journey to Canada, and settled in Calgary. No matter the turbulence or upheaval in his life or homeland of Punjab, Mohan Singh stood firm in his principles, and remained in Chardi Kala until his last breath.
Funeral Services will be held at the COUNTRY HILLS CREMATORIUM, 11995 – 16 Street NE, and will be followed by a religious program at the Guru Ram Das Darbar, located at 5225 – 84 Street NE.

My deepest sympathies and condolences to your family for the loss of such a good man, I worked with Mohan or Moe as we called him at work which was CP rail as a boilermaker. He had a great sense of humor and was a nice person to chat with. He was a good listener and was a very respected man. My name is Rene Deman and I enjoyed working with and beside Moe till he retired. He will be sorely missed.
“What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch. We may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget” Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh
I am Veerins friend and I am very sorry that he passed away.
