In Loving Memory of Shigara “Gary” Singh Atkar
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Shigara “Gary” Singh Atkar on Tuesday, the 13th of August 2024 at the age of 86. A pillar of strength and resilience, Shigara faced his battle with cancer with extraordinary courage and grace. His unwavering determination to live life on his terms and his relentless optimism in the face of adversity were a source of inspiration to all who knew him. His legacy is one of perseverance, kindness, and an unyielding commitment to his family and community.
Born in Parwala, India, Shigara grew up in his ancestry home Kultham (A.K.A Kultham Abdullah Shah village) a village in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district of Punjab State, India, on March 1, 1938, just before the upheaval of World War II and the partition of India, Shigara was the eldest of his siblings., Shigara was shaped by the rich cultural heritage and values of his homeland. He moved to the UK at a young age, where he began working alongside his father in the foundries before transitioning to a long and dedicated career with the Royal Mail until his retirement. His work ethic was unmatched, and he was recognized with an award during a historic snowstorm for his exceptional commitment to his duties. Later in life, Shigara relocated to Canada, where he continued to work diligently, even taking on roles such as driving a school bus until he reached the maximum age allowed by the Calgary Board of Education and on Saturdays working at a car auction for nothing more than to keep himself busy.
Shigara was not only a devoted family man but also a stalwart member of the Monterey Park Community Centre, where he served for over two decades. His contributions to the community were vast and varied, from playing the role of Father Christmas during the holidays to organizing charitable events, including a significant eye camp for the less fortunate in India. Shigara’s sense of humor, warmth, and generosity endeared him to all who crossed his path, and his presence was a beacon of light to those around him.
Family was the cornerstone of Shigara’s life. He was a loving husband to his wife, Mohinder Kaur, cherished by his children, siblings, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, family brought Shigara immense joy, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
In his later years, Shigara’s battle with cancer became a defining chapter in his life. His commitment to maintaining his health through regular exercise allowed him to qualify for and benefit from advanced treatments that extended his life by precious years. Throughout this time, he remained fiercely independent, demonstrating the same dignity and honor that had characterized his entire life.
The Atkar family extends their deepest gratitude to the Foothills Hospital Cancer Centre, AgeCare SkyPointe Hospice Care, and the compassionate home care providers who supported Shigara during his final journey.The dedicated doctors, nurses, and pain management team that provided home care that allowed him to live his last days with dignity and peace. The family’s appreciation for these individuals’ tireless efforts cannot be overstated.
Shigara’s life was a testament to the power of love, resilience, and community. His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him, and his memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
